OVERVIEW: The Type 12 is a lightweight, air and surface-launched anti-submarine torpedo developed by Japan to replace the earlier Type 97. It entered service with the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) in 2012.

DETAILS: “Type” reflects the Japanese designation system, and the project name was G-RX5. It was developed by Japan’s Technical Research and Development Institute and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, beginning in the late 1990s. The Type 12 was designed to improve performance in shallow and variable-depth waters compared to the Type 97. It is 324 mm in diameter, about 2.8 m long, and uses active/passive acoustic homing with advanced signal processing. Propulsion is electric, using a pump-jet system, and exact speed or range values remain classified.

TYPE: Lightweight Anti-Submarine Torpedo

FUNCTION: The Type 12 is launched from 324 mm torpedo tubes on surface vessels or from ASW aircraft. It autonomously searches for and engages enemy submarines using advanced acoustic sensors optimized for performance in complex undersea conditions.
